UCAS: Student Guide for UK Admissions

In the whole wide world, UK stands out to be one of the most popular destinations for international students. Every year in UK, there are more than 485,000 EU and international students’ enrolments. Of these, hardly there are 143,000 are from the EU, which means the maximum student population in UK is international. over 140 universities and other higher education institutions are available for you to choose each offering a variety of tertiary qualifications recognized all across the world. So, pursuing a bachelor's or masters in UK is definitely a great idea.

Although when it comes to tuition fees, it varies between institutions. After Brexit, from August 2021 unless the EU and EEA nationals from Ireland are already living in the UK and are registered under the EU Settlement Scheme, they won't be eligible for home fee status. English language requirements, visa conditions, and work permit restrictions are something that you need to be aware of.

This guide will give you all the required information for UK admissions through UCAS. So, read on as this is a good place to start.

Applying to a UK University

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) usually process the undergraduate applications to UK universities whereas the postgraduate applications are done usually via the university website directly to the university.

Being an international student if you want to study at one of the UK’s top universities, you should make sure you get your application in well before the deadline. A huge list of universities in UK for international students is available for you to choose from.

You’ll need to find out how they compare to the course entry requirements of your chosen university if your qualifications were gained outside the UK. Details about this would be given on some university’ websites, or you can contact them for guidance. You can also contact UK NARIC if you need a ‘statement of comparability’.

How to Apply on UCAS

·    Make sure to input all your information correctly in the form required to register your details on the UCAS website.

·     Owing to commit to a course that you’ll be happy for the next three or more years, choose it. In case you are in a dilemma of choosing the course, you can use an edu-tech platform called ‘Course Finder’ developed by KC Overseas Education to search through over 70,000 courses.

·      Take note of the course’s unique UCAS code once you've found the right one course, as you'll need this when you fill in the application form.

·      Find the right university for you. The points to consider while selecting the university is:

Ø  League table position

Ø  Location

Ø  Accommodation

Ø  Facilities

·         Make a note of their unique UCAS codes once you've made your shortlist of universities.

·       Application form filling to be done rightly. With 1 UCAS Application form you will have 5 choices, but you would be filling it only once. It's up to you to apply to five different courses at the same university or five different universities for the same course or–. You only write one personal statement for all five choices.. As its only 1 application for 5, similarly, for all five choices you only have to write one personal statement.

·       Wait for replies after submission. Universities will take the time to consider once you've submitted your application, and you'll receive either offers or rejections.

UCAS Cost

A UCAS application costs a fee which generally many students tend to forget. For 2020 entry, the costs were £25 for multiple course choices and £20 for a single course. As of 2021, £26 for multiple choices is the cost of the application and £20 for a single choice.

UCAS Deadlines

Whether the applicants are UK, EU or international students, the UCAS deadlines apply to all.

From early September, the applications can be accepted by UCAS that is the year before the course starts. October deadlines are also there for applications to Oxford and Cambridge. You need to apply by mid-January for the majority of degrees although many institutions will continue to accept applications from international students after this date as well. There is a later deadline for some art and design courses.

You have entered into Clearing if you applied after the end of June, where you’ll need to contact institutions directly and on courses, if any spaces remain, they may be highly sought after. International students mostly apply well before this date thus allowing them plenty of time to make immigration, travel, and accommodation arrangements.

Remember to check your eligibility for any possible scholarships, loans, and grants as well as the UCAS application. Whether at the undergraduate or postgraduate level many universities have scholarships especially for international students.
